CHAPTER SIXTEEN
LUKE
Tonightâs the night.
My first official date with Tessa.
Hannahâs all set for a Saturday night sleepover at my folksâ place. Not that I expect to be having my own sleepover, but Iâm not sure how late Iâll be out. Better to have my Banana settled in for the night than to risk waking her to carry her home. Sheâs back to feeling like herself again after the crud she dealt with last weekend, thank goodness.
Hannahâs question about Tessa and I having a sleepover last weekend makes me chuckle even now.
My girl was embarrassed as all get-out.
Me? I canât wait to have a real sleepover with her.
One that doesnât include a whole lot of sleeping.
Sheâs not ready for that, though. And I can be a patient man.
Even though these blue balls might kill me while I wait.
Even though it gives me and my dick lots of together time in the shower these days.
When she showed up on my front porch last Saturday night, looking all kinds of nervous and cute, it did something to me.
The youâre brilliant she murmured when she realized that the vision for my home came from my own head and from my own hands? That comment made that tight knot in my chest grow so big it pushed against my ribcage.
No one has ever said something like that to me before.
And having her in my homeâ¦God, that felt so right. Like written-in-the-stars, meant-to-be kind of stuff we all grow up hearing about but, deep down, doubt will really happen. Even though my own parents are great examples of what it means to love for the long haul, being burned and left high and dry made me wonder if Iâd ever experience that kind of magic.
But Iâm here to tell youâthat shit really happens.
Tessa Burton is that kind of magic.
What weâre doing feels like the most natural thing in the world to me. The List that troubled me for months? A long-forgotten fever dream.
Iâm ready for a heavy dose of that Tessa magic tonight. Cordell helped me run through my options, but our choices are pretty slim here in Bennett. If we want to go somewhere fancier than Ruthâs, weâd have to drive a bit. But Tessaâs made it clear that sheâs not impressed by fine dining.
I pull up to her house and park along the curb. Iâm so revved up I forget about the bouquet of wildflowers lying on the passenger seat, and I have to jog back across the yard to get them. Then Iâm hoofing it, climbing the stairs two at a time up to the second floor. When I reach the door to apartment four, I take a deep breath before knocking.
Iâm blown away by the vision that answers the door.
My girl, sunshine smile in place, looking like all my wildest dreams come true.
Sheâs wearing black jeans that hug all her curves just right and a black and white checked button-up shirt under a loose tan sweater. Short tan boots complete the look. Her hair is styled in those loose waves she was sporting when she came over last weekend.
